| This has been the first time that the International SKA Forum was held in Europe. It was a unique opportunity to develop further European and global collaboration in the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project. The choice of the Netherlands as host of the International SKA Forum confirms the prominent position this country has in the field of radio astronomy. | |
| The International SKA Forum 2010 has highlighted the many opportunities SKA offers to all sectors of society, and aims to advance the process of securing wide support and significant European and global funding for the project. | |
| Besides Heino Falcke, professor for radio astronomy at the Radboud University Nijmegen, some prominents attended the forum like Minister van der Hoeven of Economic Affairs of the Netherlands, as well as the Australian and South African science ministers. | |
| At the forum, Heino Falcke stressed, that the experience in building and utilizing the LOFAR telescope, will put Dutch astronomers into an ideal position for harvesting the technological and scientific benefits the SKA will provide. "Our current LOFAR and future SKA efforts will ensure rich scientific prospects for the next two decades ahead of us, which may be called a golden age of radio astronomy. The astronomy department at Radboud University will seek to be an important part of this." he says. | |

| The Square Kilometre Array or SKA is an international network of interconnected LOFAR antennas, which will be the leading international radio telescope for the 21st Century. The total collecting area will be approximately one square kilometre giving 50 times the sensitivity, and 10,000 times the survey speed, of the best current-day telescopes. | |
| More than 70 institutes in 20 different countries, together with industry partners, are participating in the scientific and technical design of the SKA telescope. The construction of the telescope is expected to begin in 2013 with a target cost of €1,5 billion. | |
| The SKA will address fundamental unanswered questions about our Universe including how the first stars and galaxies formed after the Big Bang, how galaxies have evolved since then, the role of magnetism in the cosmos, the nature of gravity, and the search for life beyond Earth.
