MeerLICHT

MeerLICHT is BlackGEM’s sister project and comprises a single BlackGEM telescope. Critically, this first telescope system acts as a prototype for the BlackGEM array and couples one of the BlackGEM telescopes to the MeerKAT radio array (a precursor to the Square Kilometer Array) located in South Africa. This allows for the simultaneous study of the optical-radio skies!

MeerLICHT is installed at the Sutherland site in South Africa. Due to complementary science goals with BlackGEM, it is run as an independent project. It has been operational since late 2018 and is currently doing a full six- filter Southern Sky Survey, as well as co-staring with the MeerKAT radio array
