In preparation for the Athena X-ray satellite, we plan to investigate the properties of fast, extra-galactic X-ray transients. The PhD student will work on the Chandra, XMM-Newton and eROSITA serendipitously discovered transients (e.g. see Jonker et al. 2013, Glennie et al. 2015, Bauer et al. 2017). Through this work (s)he will determine the Athena event rate (extrapolating Chandra, XMM-Newton and eROSITA detection rates) of such events. For this (s)he will work together with and spend time at the MPE in Garching. There (s)he will work with dr. A. Rau and an already funded MPE-based PhD on the eROSITA serendipitous detection and ground based follow-up of X-ray transients. This observationally based PhD student will also be involved in the multi-wavelength and multi-messenger follow-up of events. | In preparation for the Athena X-ray satellite, we plan to investigate the properties of fast, extra-galactic X-ray transients.
