I just published a comprehensive biography of Jacobus Cornelius Kapteyn (1851-1922) with Springer. in the colloquium I will trace Kapteyn's life from his birth in Barneveld through his mathematics studies  in Utrecht, his position as `observator' at Leiden Observatory, followed by his appointment in 1878 in Groningen. I then will give an overview of his scientific work, including the Cape Photographic Durchmusterung, his work on stellar parallaxes, Star Streams and the Plan of Selected Areas. I will present the Kapteyn Universe. This is both a model for the distribution of stars as well as a discussion of what we would now call the dynamics.  It was based on Shapley's incorrect deduction that interstellar absorption was negligible and will briefly review what would have happened had Kapteyn adopted his own determination of interstellar absorption.
